Man, what can I say about Castlevania: Order of Ecclasia? It was one of the toughest demons I’ve ever exorcised from a DS. Well, partly because I’m not an exorcists. I was just a homeless hippy sleeping in the bathroom of a church. Since no one else dared to tackle this beast, they came to me. They also promised me lots of food, women, and cloths if I got the job done. This is one job I’ll never forget. I remember it just like it was yesterday. Actually, it was yesterday.

As I came into contact with the possessed DS, I was horrified to see moving pictures and sound coming out of it. I wasted no time and took out a hammer and started smashing this possessed device; then I processed to drown it in holy water (I dunked it into the toilet). Finally, I noticed this little crucifix on the left side of the DS. I touched it and shouted: “The power of Christ compels you! The power of Christ compels you!” Right away, an ugly girlie monkey started to move! This is what happens when you have a really crappy instruction manual. I could’ve avoided all that had I known about touching the little crucifix on the DS. The voice in my head said I must team up with this monkey to perform the exorcism ritual to rid the DS of Dracula. So I named her Shanoa. I don’t know, it just sounds very fitting name for a hairy ugly monkey.

When I was just a little girl
I asked my mother, what will I be

I quickly learned how to control Shanoa with an array of attacks, jumps, and slides. Sometimes I really hate her, because she doesn’t like duck/jump combos. There’s a small delay coming out of the duck position. I sometimes ended up sliding when I wanted to jump after ducking. This causes some minor problems in an already difficult task. But I really love her super springy magnet jump. It was lots of fun messing around with it. It’s a shame the demons weren’t smart enough to create more obstacles around this cool power.

Wait, Shanoa, has more tricks up her sleeves! She has this totally new ability to suck Glyphs from enemies; which is totally not the Soul System with a different name! She can’t fight without Glyphs, so instead of weapons, you equip Glyphs on her. Different enemies are weak to different Glyph attributes, so you have to constantly switch, or take forever on a basic enemy. Good thing you can equip different sets and switch them on the fly. It’s very convenient, and makes most of your Glyphs useful. You can find new Glyphs in hidden rooms, after boss fights, or occasionally dropped by defeated enemies; which is totally not like the Soul System; or making me pull my hair out in frustration over rare ones. She could even combined two of the same or different Glyphs for a super attack. In no time, we were kicking arse for the lord.

Will I be pretty, will I be rich
She said make Death my bitch

I’ve heard of this demon’s extreme difficulty had scared away many fellow exorcists. Being the fool hardy fellow that I am, I took on this job and tried to succeed where others have failed. It was brutal, until I discovered a secret — a secret so shocking, it would cause the universe to implode. Please don’t tell others my secret, or else I’d be out of a job.

I figured out you can dodge enemy attacks instead of standing still like a vegetable. Dodging enemy attacks means you take no damage! Who knew? Why, if someone had created interactive games that can be played on a magic picture box, they should disable dodging, or else their games would be too easy. Just look at how easy it is to exorcised big nasty demons with dodging. Dare I say, I had fun molesting these helpless giants.

Que Sera, Sera
Whatever will be, will be
You just don’t have skills like me
Que Sera, Sera
Whatever will be, will be

I’d say it took me about 12 hours to exorcise all the demons and Dracula. I would have taken more time, but I couldn’t figure out how to get lost. It’s like someone decided to make a map explaining how to walk in a straight line. Even though you’ll be going up, down, left and right; rarely do you deviate from your path. What little branching paths lead to small areas with little reason to return. Well, you could come back again with a boy monkey.

What’s this about a boy monkey you ask? It’s a long story. There’s this place in New Jersey called Castlevania and they’re always being haunted by Dracula. This Belmonts family runs a business hunting Dracula for generations. After their last son, Juste, killed Dracula, he got a lot of money and had a doctor cut off his weewee. Now the Belmont family is gone. So this new group call Ecclasia comes to pick up the slack, and they created this thing called Dominus. Dominus needs a human host to unleash its power, and the boy monkey really wants that power, and he steals it. Shanoa is sent to retrieve Dominus, and find out what he is up to. Along the way, she learns moves from Geese Howard, dodge monkey boy’s Fei Long kick, and find out Dracula has learn Rugal’s Genocide Cutter. I think they really want to fight in a tournament fighter — I mean engage in some 3D Versus Action to settle the score.

Before they play a real tough game
People all ask me, what will they be

Even though my soul is outside the DS, I can see and hear everything that goes on with Shanoa, and I didn’t have to eat mushrooms! I like all the freaky monsters; especially the big ones. The backgrounds are pretty, and they make music that I end up forgetting. Sometimes, Shanoa would even talk to me. It was scary when the monsters started talking to me too. They said my mother sucks Glyphs in hell. But you know what’s really freaky? Everybody in this possessed box can speak weeaboo. I was surrounded by a herd of weeaboos once. They were going to kill me because I pronounced Kage as Cage, but I escaped with minor injuries. Now with the press of a button, I can drive back weeaboos using their own language. Back, you filthy creatures, back!

It was a very rewarding job, and I hope to keep it that way. I learned a lot from this experience as an exorcist. Who knew you’re suppose to crack a crab’s shell with an elevator!? So that’s what I’ve been doing wrong at Red Lobster. I think I’m going to go steal some crabs and drop an elevator on them right now. See ya around.

Will I be casual, will I be core
I said a graphic whore

Graphics: 86%
Pros: Good graphics and nice artwork. Lots of brand new sprites. Shanoa’s promotional art looks good…
Cons: Some minor slowdown and unconvincing parallax scrolls. Ugly women. I’m sorry, but a huge rack =/= attractive.

Gameplay: 75%
Pros: Most Glyphs are useful. Fun boss battles. Some unlockables add replay value. Training hall has the best level design…
Cons: …I wish I could say the same for the rest of the levels. That and grinding for some Glyphs hurt the score. You need to complete silly missions to access some very basic items.

Sound: 80%
Pros: Very good soundtrack with tons of voice work. You can even select the Japanese voices. Everyone’s happy.
Cons: The music sounds really good, but for some reason, I just didn’t find them memorable.

Controls: 90%
Pros: Almost everything works.
Cons: Keyword: almost.

Story: 80%
Pros: Probably the best plot in a Metroidvania yet. The plot twist really did surprise me. The villagers are pretty funny.
Cons: Who plays these games for plot?

Recommendation: A must play for Castlevania fans. I just want to add that this game is nowhere near as hard as some have claimed. This is coming from someone who couldn’t beat Castlevania 1-4 without skipping with passwords. I only beat Rondo on the Turbo Duo fair an square. I consider my gaming skills as average at best. I wouldn’t recommend it to people who can’t dodge to save their life, or never enjoyed this series in the first place.

Overall: 79% Delicious

Kirby’s back, and he’s angry! Who wouldn’t be after getting crapped on by Crapcom’s Amazing Mirror and Squeak Squad. Join Kirby in his angriest adventure yet in Kirby’s Super Star Ultra — a remake of Kirby Super Star on the SNES. This isn’t a brand new game, but it does offer many surprises for veteran players. The chance of the original appearing on virtual console is slim, but if I’m wrong, this review will provide sufficient information for both versions.

As always, Kirby tortures his foes to death by eating them, stripping the flesh from their bones, then spit out their corpse/eat their brains to gain their fighting abilities. These abilities are no longer limited to a single attack. Kirby gains a brand new set of moves to massacre his foes. For example, if you gain Suplex, you can break someone’s spine with a back breaker; or smash their face in; or repeatedly stomp the living snot out of them. Out of the 19 different abilities, each of them provides at least 4 or 5 different moves giving you a grand total of… *counts fingers* …a lot!

Great Cave Offensive’s new background.

If that wasn’t enough, Kirby can saw open his enemies’ skull, and replace the brain with a mind control chip; transforming it to a helper. This helper can be controlled by the computer, or by a friend with local wireless play. Even without a friend, the computer helper will fearlessly attack anything in sight with little regard for their own safety. This helper has the same moves as whatever you just ate, and has his own life bar. You can share food, so there’s no fighting over that single slice of pizza anymore! The helpers are technically invincible, because once they run out of health, they can touch a completely different enemy (those with special powers) and transform into it; or Kirby can turn it back into an item, eat it, then call back the helper with full health again. It’s a fun game to play by yourself, but even better with a friend.

If there’s one thing that hampered the gameplay in the original, it’s the slowdown when the action and violence gets too intense. This graphical issue doesn’t exist in KSSU. Not only that, but original’s unique blend of pre-rendered and hand-drawn sprites have all received a face lift. There might be the occasional background that looks inferior to the SNES, but they are very rare. All the cinemas have been redone with CGI, and there’s plenty of them. Some might cry foul, but I like them. The little stage intros in Spring Breeze are intact in their original form.

My favorite new mini-game.

If you’re afraid that this game won’t last very long, fear not. This game is packed with lots of great content. I’d say about 6 hours of game for me. This is coming from someone who knows the original SNES game like the back of his hands. Finding all the treasures in Great Cave Offensive could easily take a newbie a few hours. Although it’s labeled as having multiple games in one package, you can also look at it as different stages of one whole game. It might have been acceptable back in the old days, but even by the late NES cycle, huge levels with multiple stages weren’t rare. You can call KSSU multiple games in one, or various level with some slightly altered play styles, it doesn’t matter.

Let’s take a quick look at everything this game has to offer. You have to beat some of them in order to unlock others.

Spring Breeze, DynaBlade, and Revenge of Meta Knight play like regular platformers. Unleash Kirby’s rage and plow through the stages, then savagely beat the bosses until they cry. I swear, when I first saw the ending of DynaBlade years ago, I thought Kirby was trying to push the nest off a cliff to kill them all.

Kirby’s pissed off.

Great Cave Offensive has excellent replay value. Kirby follows the footsteps of the greatest explorers of our time in a wondrous new land. That means genocide, and looting its treasures — all 60 of them. Many of the treasures requires you to use the different abilities to solve some puzzles, while others are just cleverly hidden. This is what Amazing Mirror was striving to be, and failed — miserably — to be. It’s shorter than Amazing Mirror, yet packed with more secrets, action, and puzzles. I like to erase my file and replay this to collect everything after suffering from Kirby violence withdrawal.

Milky Way Wishes’ level structure is the same as the others, but the core gameplay is a bit different. Kirby can no longer gain the abilities of the enemies he eats. He must locate these abilities to collect them all. Once you have them, you can call upon any power/helper anytime. There’s also a very cool side scrolling shooter stage towards the end.

Gourmet Race is the ultimate way to eat and lose weight.

Gourmet Race isn’t a full game, yet it’s much deeper than a mini-game. Your goal is to race against King Dedede in 3 relatively lengthy levels as you try to scarf up as much food as possible along the way. There are no enemies or bosses to fight, but still lots of fun. This is the only game that doesn’t support multiplayer.

These 6 games make up the bulk of the original package, along with a few mini-games. Ultra adds 2 new modes, mini-games, and various ways to tackle the arena. I don’t want to spoil too much for the veteran players, but you will get to see at least 6-8 brand new bosses and other surprises. The 2 new games alone take up at least an hour each.

Completing this package is an incredible soundtrack that sets the tone for the relentless violence. The music can bring about feeling of exploring new land; or tell a tale of Meta Knight and his crew’s brave stand against the ferocious pink harbinger of death. Just listening to the satisfying chops as the enemy is disemboweled makes me gitty like a schoolgirl.

Not even years in anger management can stop Nintendo’s angry mascot. Kirby’s Super Star was the angriest game on the SNES, but Kirby only gets angrier in this new DS remake. You too will be angry if you miss out on this wonderful game!

Graphics: 89%
Pros: Colorful graphics with a unique blend of CG and hand-drawn sprites.
Cons: Some might not like the new CG intros. One or two backgrounds doesn’t look as good as the original.

Gameplay: 85%
Pros: Lots of fun ways to kill, plus multiplayer capabilities.
Cons: Still too easy.

Sound: 92%
Pros: One of the most underrated soundtracks of all time.
Cons: The music is a bit on the quiet side.

Controls: 95%
Pros: Excellent controls for all the cool moves you can pull off.
Cons: Switching the buttons can throw off people who spent many hours with the original.

Story: 80%
Pros: A story that encompasses a war between the sun and the moon.
Cons: Watching poor Meta Knight’s gang heroically fight to the bitter end against Kirby, only to be massacred.

Recommendation: Kirby and platformer fans will love this. Gamers too insecure about themselves should stay away — I mean, Kirby kills and he’s angry!

Overall: 90% Awesometastic

Space Invaders Extreme just came out of nowhere for me. I guess I forgot it was the 30th anniversary for this game — a game so popular that it caused a national coin shortage in Japan! What is it about flying pooping alien crabs that just draws you back for more? Today, I proudly bring you a review of this classic remake or sequel or whatever. Seriously, what’s wrong with calling this Space Invaders 2? It has enough to stand out of the shadow of the original classic.

The basic gameplay remains the same. Alien Nuclear Pooping Crabs are vandalizing windshields all over the galaxy, and it’s up to you to vaporize this menace. You can only move left and right along the bottom of the screen while you shoot and dodge nuclear poop. A space ship might fly over occasionally for you to shoot to score extra points, or take you to a bonus round — which you can score extra points. Wave after wave of aliens descend upon you, and if they reach the bottom, you lose a life. Of course you also lose a life if the poop hits your ship.

First difference you’ll notice is that you no longer have the McDonald’s arches for protection. You can neutralize incoming fire with your own beam instead. If you manage to shoot down 4 of the same colored aliens in a row, a weapon power up will appear. You better be quick, because these weapons only last for a limited amount of time. With a power up system like this, you want to maintain your weapon while killing the right colors at the same time. It’s going to be harder because the power ups also kills more effectively, and you can easily kill the wrong color, thus destroying your color chain for more power ups. It’s a double edged sword. Our little friends also have a few new maneuvers up their sleeves — uh tentacles. They’ll dive bomb, rotate, use shields, and just plain being a pain in the butt. Just when you think you figured them out, they pull out some new tricks, maintaining the game’s difficulty. At the end of the stage, you encounter a boss fight. Once you win, you’re ranked based on your score.

The new additions really help make the gameplay much more addictive. I’m always trying to replay and find new ways to score more points. Bonus stages can be unlocked, and there’s always a new challenge. I’ve probably seen more than 10 different types of bonus stages, and I probably still haven’t seen them all.

Throughout the game, you’ll most likely be focusing your attention of the same 4 or 5 color aliens to notice the backgrounds. The backgrounds are dark with swirling LSD inspired images, while each press of the fire button causes a sound effect that blends with the rhythm of the techno soundtrack. The presentation’s not the greatest, but that’s trivial compare to the rest of the package.

Space Invaders Extreme is a welcomed update that keeps the spirit of the original even with all the added features. This is one of those games where you can pick up and play for a few minute, or play for a long session. You’ll just keep coming back for more. Outside of the main mode, you have other challenges to tackle, or just play for more points. This is 20 bucks well spent. I’m very curious as to how they’ll top this with the upcoming WiiWare game.

Graphics: 52%
Pros: Colorful aliens and no slow down in intense fights.
Cons: There’s not much to look at.

Gameplay: 75%
Pros: Lots of fun and surprising amount of depth despite the short review. Good replay value and extra modes.
Cons: Could be repetitive for non-shooter fans. Also a bit easy.

Sound: 55%
Pros: Funky techno soundtrack.
Cons: Not the most memorable music.

Controls: 79%
Pros: Simple controls.
Cons: Have to tap like crazy, but the firing rate response is still sluggish.

Story: 200%
Pros: The highest score for plot on this site’s history…
Cons: …for a category that isn’t worth crap in this game.

Recommendation: Fans of the old school classic will enjoy this. People looking for a good budget game should also have a look and see. If you like fancy graphics and plot, you won’t find such a thing here.

After a bit of a break, I’m back with more reviews. I took care of a couple of articles, and got some ideas for new ones already. Hopefully, they will be just as enjoyable as the first one. Now then, onto Ys Book I&II review.

Ah, the Turbo Duo, the cherished memories of days gone by. It’s not because I actually owned one as a kid, mind you, it’s because of all the hype. Back then, the system uses CDs! In the mind of an elementary school kid, CDs equals awesome! CDs made games so much more awesome! I had no idea what the hell a CD was. Well, I know the game’s in a CD, but other than that, I really didn’t know what it meant to be stored in a CD. Dammit, everybody knows CDs are cool. I remember seeing the screen shots and seeing how awesome the games look. Well today, I’m going to jump the gun and review a virtual console game that’s not yet been released. Today I will review Book of Ys I&II. I’m doing this for a couple of reasons. 1) I want to jump the gun and have a review before other people. 2) I don’t have enough reviews for other consoles. This is something I intend to rectify. 3) This game holds a special place in my heart, and is also something a little different from all the other reviews on HandheldWii, thus far. 4) Because I felt like it.

By the time I finally got to play the Turbo Duo, I was already smart enough to understand what a CD was. Part of the mystery’s all gone, but knowing the truth didn’t dampen my enthusiasm for playing the once haloed creation. The first game on my list was Castlevania Rondo Of Blood. Man, what a game. Spot on controls, good replay value, and an amazing soundtrack. Oh wait… I’m suppose to be talking about Ys. Yes, Ys, it was a groundbreaking game at the time as well. I believe it was the flagship game for the Turbo Duo. It was heralded as one the greatest games on the system. This game created a brand new genre called the walking sim. Never before has a game been able to recapture the excitement of walking around. I mean, seeing your character put one foot in front of the other was mind-blowing back then — and still is today. Can you possibly think of anything more exciting than walking around? Take that, you good for nothing floor! See a cavern filled with dangers? These mazes will test your ability to press the directional pad and solve puzzles (which are solved by more walking around)! I’m walking all over you thanks to the power made possible by the CD-ROM!

They didn’t just stop by making a walking game, there’s monster combat as well. How do you fight these monsters you ask? By walking into the them! “Take that, and that, and some of this, and some of that, and — wait, I just got hurt. How’d I get hurt? I was walking into that monster the same way as before.” Then I came to a shocking realization: I wasn’t fighting, I was fornicating! I fornicated with practically every monster on the map and caught aids. I better level up some more, and stock up on protection in the shops. For freedom, Adol must furiously fornicates flocks of ferocious fiends to free the forsaken folks from a feisty felon. Do you see that? That is the power of the CD! CDs are awesome!!!

With unparallel storage capacity back then (hell, 650 MB’s still no joke today), Ys took advantage of every MB. The Red Book soundtrack is stunning, giving each dungeon and map a rich soundtrack unmatched by any cartridge game. Falcom spared no expense and hired a team of kindergarten teachers to bring the cutscenes to life. Now, you too, can enjoy the condescending tone of story-telling in the comfort of your own home. These dialogs are also accompanied by a large still scene straight out of a picture book. Of course the actual in game graphics look like higher resolution NES with more colors. They do get better in Book II. They also crammed two games into a single disc. I know it’s an unfair comparison, but thanks to the CD, Ys really made The Legend of Zelda on the NES look like a hundred hour game. Thanks to the ginormous adventure of pre-school proportions, you might not even notice that you’ve progressed into the second game. If only this game didn’t require leveling up, you’d finish both books in about three hours or less. It is truly a testament of talent when you can stick two games into a CD, and still have a world smaller (like 5x smaller) than LOZ on the NES. These aren’t programmers, these are gods! This is the godly gift of the CD!

In case you haven’t figured it out by now, I hate this game. This game is rotting monkey feces on a stick. The hype surrounding this game made it all the more disappointing. It blows my mind how anyone could possibly find fun in a game where all you do is walk. You might want to occasionally press the “I” button to use magic in Book II. I have almost nothing good to say about this game save for the music. Well, I guess the plot’s ok. It’s nothing revolutionary, nor is it crap. Still, I want this game to die and burn in the depths of hell. When I said this game is different from other reviews from HandheldWii, I meant that this is the first truly bad game I’ve reviewed, so far. I didn’t want people to think I was soft on games.

Graphics: 42%
Pros: Large well drawn stills for cutscenes.
Cons: The actual graphics are bare bones. Animation is almost non-existent.

Gameplay: 8%
Pros: Some puzzles. You don’t have to play this game.
Cons: I had to play this game. Perpetual grind fest to lengthen 2 pathetically shallow games on a CD. Almost no gameplay to speak of, besides walking. Go check out the Mines in Book I… you’ll see, or rather, you won’t see. Lowest gameplay score yet.

Sound: 80%
Pros: The soundtrack is the only saving grace. The voices fit well enough.
Cons: The towns use the Turbo’s own sound chip. The acting’s tone remains me of a kindergarten teacher telling stories. Even modern games suffer from this. Diablo 2 and Oblivion just to name some. It’s still better than Resident Evil or SOTN though.

Controls: 90%
Pros: You walk.
Cons: And to think, I thought the Book II would improve upon the original by making the computer walk for you, instead, you have to like, press the I button to use magic. That’s a step backwards!

Story: 66%
Pros: Boy boy on an adventure to discover the ancient lost civilization and save it from destruction. Holds up well to this day.
Cons: Not the most exciting plot either.

Recommendation: If you like games with no gameplay, extreme bouts of repetition, or enjoy bad games. Everyone else, RUN!!!

The moon is recovering from what is best described as the most bizarre accident to occur in the last 100 billion years. A man had jumped so high, he rammed his head into the moon’s ass. Rescuers quickly arrived at the National Ninja Preserve to aid the hapless victims. After hours of painstaking hard work by a team of surgeons, they were finally able to remove a man from the moon’s rectum. Both recovered quickly, and was released from the hospital earlier today. I had a chance to talk with the man involved in this little accident for the full details. Due to my bountiful lack of Japanesian literacy, I had help from translator Sakamoto No Ripetomato.

As it turns out, the man who was involved in this bizarre accident was none other than Kage — the semi-close-to-being-almost-kinda-famous-but-not-really game icon. With him was his neighbor, Chihiro, who was responsible for the 911 call to police. I started by asking them what they were doing at the National Ninja Preserve (NNP) that day. “We were there to hunt,” said Kage. “For generations, my family made a living hunting ninjas. We hunted ninjas for their meat, sold tools and crafts made from ninja bones, and we stuff our coats with ninja pubes to keep warm in the winter.”

For those unaware, the NNP opens its doors each year to licensed hunters like Kage. The mating season has come and past, and an over abundance of ninjas could stretch the preserve’s food supply. Hunters kill to keep the small park from over crowding, and pay to keep this place running. With all the different types of ninjas, various habitats were created to suit their lifestyles — from beautiful fields to thick forests; dark caverns to huge buildings. The lush colors are a sight to behold, and yet it is still not as impressive as some of the other more well funded wildlife preserves — like the big bouncing schoolgirl bosom preserve in Japan, for example. Even yours truly had spent a bit of his childhood visiting NNF. Seeing the trees today really brought back old memories of this place, but I digress.

Turning my attention, I had hoped to get some information from Chihiro, but unfortunately, she didn’t witness the whole ordeal. She was a fellow hunter, and just happened to be going the same way as Kage. “I’m here for a new coat,” she said while waving her scythe. “I can use my chain whip to smack the ninjas, just like that guy from… what’s it called? You know, haunted castle, a lotta skeletons, and he fights Batman? Anyway, I was listening to some phat beats on my ipod. I was too caught up with the music. Just when I was grooving’ to a familiar remix, I heard a loud thwack. When I looked up, I saw Kage hanging out of the moon’s ass like a turd.”

One can’t possibly imagine why a man would be so careless, much less an experience hunter like Kage. Was there more to it than that? Could it be more than just a simple hunting trip gone wrong? As it turns out, yes, there’s more to it. According to Kage, he was going high and low searching for orbs. The preserve had some other dangerous creatures lurking within, and locating these orbs will allow him to fight back, hit harder, or just offer more protection. The proper combination of orbs could mean life and death in some cases. He had to scale cliffs and slide under crevices to locate them. Some of them could be found within the elusive orange ninja of goodies.

“I guess I was just too caught up,” he says. “I wasn’t pay attention to where I was going; I had too much fun jumping so high. As I went on, my jumps grew stronger and stronger. They were getting kind of hard to control, but I guess I just ignored the warnings. I was overconfident cause I was learning new moves, too. But I had to hurry or I won’t save the princess in time.”

It turns out Kage had an ulterior motive. He was in a hurry to save a damsel in distress who had been taken into the park. In his heroic efforts to save her, he leaped high and low to search for her, unaware of his own safety. “He just wanna get laid,” Chihiro added. “I know him. He’s pissed at that Hayabusa guy cause he’s always hanging with some slut. I said that Amakusa Shiro wannabe was trouble, but noooo, you didn’t care. Gotta watch Naruto he says. Now some chick gets kidnapped, and you rush out like a freaking idiot. Serves you right!”

So through it all, Kage wasn’t just thinking of himself, but was concern with the safety of others. A true hero. Later, we went to the cops about the kidnapping, and quickly apprehended Amakusa Shiro wannabe, and foiled his attempt to start the next Samurai Shodown. I was unable to get the moon himself to comment on all this, but I was able to get a word from his proctologist, Dr. Cosmo Kramer. Dr. Kramer had this to say: “The moon was very shaken up, I can tell. He was in a lot of pain when he arrived. The first thing he said to me was ‘it was one in a million doc, it was one in a million!’”

Graphics: 70%
Pros: Lush colors, good art, and actually reminds me of a Neo Geo game for some reason.
Cons: It’s not exactly state of the art graphics.

Gameplay: 72%
Pros: A simple action packed game with lots of moves to learn, things to find, and bosses to fight. Multiple difficulty levels offer challenges to players of all skills. The orbs adds more to the game.
Cons: The level designs aren’t that good. Chihiro’s game is the same thing. Not much variety in enemies. Not a lot of depth.

Sound: 83%
Pros: Surprisingly good and action packed music. Some remixes for fans of the first game.
Cons: If you don’t enjoy ancient Japanese style music, then you won’t like it.

Controls: 80%
Pros: Most of it controls very well. You can perform a lot of moves with simple button combinations.
Cons: It’s a bit hard to control how high you can jump as you get stronger.

Story: 61%
Pros: I’d tell you…
Cons: …but then I’d have to kill you.

Recommendation: Fans of old school 2D side scrollers. Even Castlevania fans might want to take a look. Since I have no clue whether this game is coming to America or not, it’s hard to recommend an import. It is very easy to pick up and play, but it’s not exactly a 60 hour RPG either. You might not feel you’re getting enough bang for a buck. That and you have a prejudice against ninjas.

Overall: 71%

Spelunker is one of the hardest games I’ve ever reviewed — and I mean gameplay wise and score wise.

Spelunker is one of the hardest games I’ve ever reviewed — and I mean gameplay wise and score wise. The game has elements of a good game, and yet it’s plagued with design choices that’ll make you scream in frustration. While some games have aged gracefully, Spelunker feels more like could have been something special.

The goal is simple: You descend into a huge underground cavern to nab all the treasure. Many obstacle get in your way, and the limited amount of air forces you to work fast. Ghosts and bats will make your life miserable — along with tons of traps and boulders to block your path. Skills and reflex will get you through most of the traps, but ghosts requires you to blow them away with your air gun. This air gun uses air from the oxygen tank, depleting your supply faster. Luckily, there are plenty of refills throughout the cave. Each area is designed like a Metroid game with a relatively non-linear area to explore. Collect different color keys to unlock the corresponding doors to reach the lower levels. Collect as much treasure as you can, and use tools you find in the cavern to help you clear the way. So far so good right? This game doesn’t sound so bad now, does it? Yeah well, read on to find out.

Now then, here’s the kick in the nuts. This game is hard, and I don’t mean R-Type hard — I mean old school game design hard. I swear, your guy dies from the smallest drops. Drop in a small pit, die. Drop from a rope, die. Hell, the minute you press forward on the controller can kill you! If you even so much as loiter a second too long on the raising platforms, you could end up jumping to your doom. Yes, this is just like Donkey Kong. Maybe it’s just me, but I had a pretty hard time jumping from rope to rope. I often plummet to my death during those rope jumps. Had it not been so easy to die from such short falls, this game would be all too easy. See, that’s the other problem, the game’s not very long. The amount of deaths only serves to make it look longer than it really is. Once you’ve reached the bottom, you just restart the game in a different color cave. Other than the color difference, everything is the same. Well, actually, I COULD be wrong, since I pretty much gave up after a minute or two in the second cave, but I doubt it.

Like I said before, this game’s wasted potential. Had they designed more levels, and balanced the deaths a little better, this could have been a great game. Unskilled players will get easily frustrated, while skilled players will grow tired of the game very quickly. If only this game had more to offer.

Graphics: 60%
Pros: You can tell what everything is in the game.
Cons: You’re really not going to see much variety. That’s also the reason why I only gave it one screen shot.

Gameplay: 42%
Pros: The concept is cool, and it would have been pretty fun…
Cons: …but the game doesn’t have much to offer, so they decided to lengthen the game by making it extremely easy to die.

Sound: 60%
Pros: What little music that’s there is actually very enjoyable. The remix you hear in Syobon sounds awesome.
Cons: There’s not much there. Maybe 5 tracks or so? At least they don’t suck.

Controls: 75%
Pros: They work well enough.
Cons: The jumping’s a bit stiff, and jumping from rope to rope can be a pain.

Story: 42%
Pros: I just randomly taped the keyboard, then put a percentage sign next to it.
Cons: It’s so awesome. Too awesome in fact, that I had to give it a con.

Recommendation: If you’re a speed runner, you might want to give this game a try. Everybody else, stay away. There are much better playing games on the VC to choose from.

Overall: 46%

Super R-Type for the Super Nintendo was super. Keyword here is “was.” Of course, back then, every game had “Super” in the title. While I know there was an arcade port of R-Type, I don’t recall whether Super R-Type is actually a port, or a new game. Well, no matter, that’s not the focus of this review anyway.

Created in an age where sci-fi shooters ruled the arcades, the R-Type series was one of the great innovators of its time. Its versatile pod attachment and methodical gameplay put players to the ultimate test. This Super NES game is no slouch, either. Each level’s filled with a myriad of enemies, environmental hazards, and huge bosses to make your life miserable. Trust me, you will be miserable, because if you die at a boss battle, you must replay the entire stage all over again. There are no mid-level checkpoints in this game. While this adds to the challenge, it also adds unnecessary repetition. Don’t forget that you die in one hit. Another oddity is that the charge beam can’t be held down forever. Oh, you can charge indefinitely, but its level 2 power (the most useful one) will only last a few seconds before it dissipates and reverts back to level 1 charge. You must know the stage and time your charge, or you might be caught in heavy fire with a weaker blast. Well, at least you do have rapid fire, weapon power ups, and the Force Pod to help you out. The Force Pod was quite an ingenious invention, too. It is an invincible pod that can be mounted in the front or rear as a shield, or launched out to destroy and act as an extra helper (with extremely limited control). You will want to master this device if you want to survive.

While graphics aren’t everything, it does matter when it affects the gameplay. Case in point, slow-down. It is the bane of SNES action games, and Super R-Type is no exception. When large sprites and/or heavy fire engulfs the screen, be prepare for some annoying slow-downs. Otherwise, the visuals hold up very well for an early SNES game. The music also very aged gracefully, though I didn’t hear the traditional R-Type theme during the first stage.

Come to think of it, I don’t recall this game ever being “super” even back in the old days. The slow-down and the removal of mid-level checkpoints turned a hard game into a repetitive mission impossible. Had it been a little better designed, it would still be a damn solid game today. Sadly, that’s not the case. If you want to play R-Type on the Super SNES, go play R-Type 3 instead. If you still can’t stand the R-Type difficulty, try the recently released Nanostray 2 (which I scored quite well) on the DS, instead.

Graphics: 58%
Pros: Large bosses, vivid colors, and lots of sprites.
Cons: Slow-down kills gameplay. The score would have been higher had it not affected the gameplay in any way.

Gameplay: 57%
Pros: A difficult game, and good core mechanics.
Cons: Again, slow-down, and the lack of checkpoints makes this game more annoying than hard.

Sound: 72%
Pros: Still pretty darn good sounding music.
Cons: The limits of the SNES means some sounds are drowned out and lost when there’s too much going on.

Controls: 81%
Pros: Everything works well enough. The rapid fire option is a great feature.
Cons: Getting the force pod to reattach in a different position — although I guess this isn’t entirely a control issue. However, the charge shot’s limit is annoying. Oh and don’t grab too many speed power-ups, or else the slightest tap can send you crashing to your doom.

Story: 100%
Pros: Completely irrelevant to the gameplay.
Cons: Who cares.

Recommendation: This game is still worth a look for long time R-Type fans I guess. Masochists are always welcomed. Regular everyday folks stay far, far away.

Overall: 53%

Yeah, oooooo, ahhhh, that’s how it always starts. Then later come the running and screaming. I was dazzled by the visuals trickery, then I ran away screaming at the carnivorous man-eating gameplay of Iridion 3D and Nanostray. Luckily, Shin’en always delivers a sequel that more than makes up for its predecessor. Now why the hell couldn’t they get it right on the first try is beyond me, but I guess it’s better than suffering a lousy sequel to an already lousy game. Nanostray 2 is no exception, as this game shows that all it takes for Shin’en to make a good game is swift kick to the tailbone by critics and fans. Hold on to your seats folks, and get ready for some fantabulous old-school alien barbeque.

The gameplay is easily summed up as evil aliens going: “rwwaaarrrrr!” The peaceful planets are all: “waah waaaahhh!” I’m like: “yeehhhhaaa!” And then my ship is all: “pheeew pheeeew boom pheew booommmm!” Then all of a sudden there’s this boss and he’s all: “RAAAWWWR!” And I’m like: “humuna humuna humuna.” That about sums up the plot as well — that and an intergalactic virus outbreak.

As you can see from my eloquent explanation above, the gameplay’s standard shooter affair. It does, however, provide a few interesting tweaks to raise above the norm. First of all, the options (and by options, I mean little bits that float around your ship providing extra firepower) are more controllable than other shooters — including R-Type. With the push of a button, you can switch between a 45 degrees front/back shot, or a 90 degrees vertical (or horizontal depending on the stage) coverage. The stage design, enemy placement, and overwhelming odds forces you to put the options to good use. Your only other power-up comes in the form of a secondary weapon you pick at the beginning of each stage. They all use up your Nano Meter, and the amount varies depending on the destructive properties of each one. Most of them are very useful, but some will suit certain players’ style more than others. Recharging your Nano Meter is as simple as wiping out an entire wave of small enemies. This makes the secondary weapon more involving than the average smart bomb, but it’s not overpowering either.

Speaking of overpowering, the game has the usual Easy, Normal, and Hard for people of all skills. Although it’s probably more like Hard, Hell, and Bullet Orgy for the average player. And you gotta love one hit kills. This is one of those shooters where touching the scenery can also kill you. Lucky for you, they’re pretty generous with the continues. When you lose all your lives, you continue at the exactly where you died at — just like losing a life. There are no penalties like stripping you of your power-ups, either. The harder modes will still surprise you with new enemies even if you already beat it on easy. The bosses do piss me off in Hard Mode. While they’re harder, they also have like 6x the life, and once you’ve figured out the pattern, it becomes a boring endurance test than a test of reflexes.

So why am I so hyped about the controls yesterday? Oh, the regular buttons work very well, and are hardly innovative — that was until I discovered the touch screen controls. When I first saw it in the option menu, I really didn’t give it any thought. There’s no way the touch screen could provide an even better experience, right? WRONG! The touch screen allows for greater flexibility in maneuvering, and speed control. Because I had pixel accuracy with my ship’s movement, I was able to navigate some of the tightest spots riddled with enemy fire. Best of all, you can adjust ship speed to suit you at the beginning of each stage. Not once did I blame my death on the touch screen controls. I recommend everyone to give the touch screen controls a chance before writing it off. If you still don’t like it, there’s always the traditional method.

Finally, we get to the graphics and music. Fans of Shin’en’s previous efforts will not be disappointed. Lavishly rendered background, huge bosses, and a kicking techno soundtrack all come together beautifully. Some bosses are simultaneously cool and lame. Fighting a liquid metal face, lame? That liquid metal face also appears to be rendered with simple vertex shaders. It sure wouldn’t hurt to see and hear more in this game. I wonder if Shin’en would ever consider using their technology on other genres.

To round out the package, there’s also extra challenges like Contra, Arcade mode, Wi-Fi play, and online leader boards to keep you playing. While Shin’en has always made the better sequel, Nanostray 2 is easily one of their best shooter yet. This is a game for the real hardcore player. You will dive into bullet hell, come out unscathed, and jump onto the roof buck naked beating your chest and screaming in triumph. Ok, maybe you didn’t need to know about the last part, but it has that effect on people, I swear. And don’t wuss out like Gamepro (check their review, they didn’t even try the touch controls), or you could very well miss out on something really awesome!

Graphics: 88%
Pros: Some of the best graphics on the DS.
Cons: Some bosses look kinda lame.

Gameplay: 80%
Pros: Challenging, fun, and some replay value.
Cons: It’s still only 8 stages long (a shooter standard though). Even the easiest difficulty can stump casual players.

Sound: 86%
Pros: Great techno soundtrack, and the computer voice has a very lively feeling to the acting.
Cons: Well, 8 stages mean there’s about 8 track plus some other music for menus and ending.

Control: 93%
Pros: Regular controls are fine, touch screen control’s awesome.
Cons: Your hand does get in the way when using touch controls. I never died because of it though.

Story: 57%
Pros: It moves you along with some plot about viruses and defeating Momtroid Brain (you’ll see).
Cons: My version of the story’s better. And again, doesn’t matter what I give it, it’s irrelevant to the gameplay.

Recommendation: Old school gamers, shoot’em up fans, or people looking for some action should look into this. If you play nothing but RPGs or FPS games, stay the hell away. This game will eat you up. And yes, I copied and pasted this part from my Contra 4 review.

Overall: 80%

My dear readers, today, I will embark on a journey of unspeakable horrors. It is a game so bad, I had to don a hazmat suit before I dare to touch it. I do this all for you — the 2 or 3 people who actually know about this place — and play Super Turrican, by Factor 5. The mere mention of this name should give you visions of unspeakable terror. Who knows what evil lurks within a game by Factor 5? Before you read this review, I suggest you also prepare to sanitize yourself as well. I mean, after seeing Lair on the PS3, who knows what this abomination is capable of? Super Turrican could very well be the last game you’ll ever play.

My mission starts off at the ancient ruins of a once mighty alien civilization. The alien planet is a gorgeous yet treacherous land. I marvel at each background’s vivid colors and parallax scrolls while many sprites walk around without slow down. I wish I could spend more time admiring the scenery, but I had to run through the world like a walrus with a lit stick of dynamite up his butt. For once that burning fuse known as time limit runs out — kablooey! To further hinder my mission, enemies everywhere yearn for my loving craft of pulverization — and pulverize I will with one of the three available guns. Worst of all, questions constantly race through my mind as I stood before various paths laid before me. Should I explore this path; will it delay me from reaching the exit; and how much time do I have left? All these questions zipped through my head while precious seconds passed by. Suddenly, my mighty flesh rending beam of fun passes through the walls like a graphical glitch by an amateur programmer. If weren’t for my keen wits and eagle eyes, you could have gotten away with your ugly mistake, Factor 5! In a moment of defiance to further mock the incompetence of the programmers, I fired my beam through their ugly mistake to show off my superior intellect! Then it turns out I was shooting at an illusionary wall designed to cover the secret entrance. Once again, thanks to my finely tuned gaming skills and cunning, I reap the reward of gems and 1ups in the secret room. The sections without much exploration required more good old fashioned platforming skills, and fast reflexes. Though the game could use a few more bosses here and there.

The controls are ace, though the electric stun beam is a bit awkward to aim. It rotates at a full 360 degrees, and will continue to rotate as you hold either the left or right button. I found the stun beam useless anyway, so it’s no big deal. Multi-directional aiming for normal weapons would be nice for a game with enemies coming in many directions. Although this isn’t exactly a control related issue, the camera’s movement is slightly delayed whenever you move, and it could lead to some annoying problems when quick left and right jumping’s required.

I could careless about the plot, but there is a plot in there somewhere. I think it’s something about Galactus having sex with The Shredder and giving birth to some weird hybrid that took over an alien world. The Master Chief cruises through the galaxy in his pimp-mobile picks up the alien distress signal, and decided it was time to kick ass and chew bubble. I don’t know, I spent more time reading the end credits to see who else was in Factor 5 back then, than spend time reading whatever plot that was there.

The release of Lair on the PS3 was a huge disappointment for Factor 5 fans. The game was panned by critics everywhere due to the controls and disappointing gameplay. What’s worse, the game also raped your mom, spread AIDS across the globe, punched kittens, and rendered all their previous efforts to crap — Super Turrican is no exception. With a huge hole torn through the space time continuum caused by the suckage of Lair, Super Turrican must pay the price of fanboy logic. This game would have been amazing if it was released in 1993 without the heinous sin known as Lair created in 2007!

Graphics: 85%
Pros: Colorful sprites, no slow down, and lots of effects.
Cons: Some areas could use more inspired art. The last stage screams Alien ripoff. Gameplay: 76%
Pros: Intense combat and Metroid like exploration. The levels still have a single linear exit, but you’re rewarded for your exploration with powers ups.
Cons: The roll up ball feature is kind of useless, and so are the bombs you drop in ball form. The game is over too quickly. Not enough cool boss fights.

Sounds: 80%
Pros: Each level is split up into a few sections, and almost every section has it’s own music. Very good stereo effects too.
Cons: Doesn’t fit the game very well.

Controls: 83%
Pros: Virtually everything is solid.
Cons: Still not 100% perfect, but my main gripe is the stun beam aiming. It’s just a pain.

Story: 100%
Pros: There’s a story.
Cons: And nobody gives a damn.

Recommendation: People who enjoy a mix of Contra and Metroid. Not recommended for people who believe Lair sucked so bad, that all their previous efforts should also be hated.

Overall: 79%
